I have been in love with painting since I was a child. Our family ate our humble meals at a table constantly cluttered with paints and brushes and half finished small works of art. I remember I used to thin my cheap oil paint by dipping my brush into the glass oil lamp that lighted the house.

I knew an old art teacher who lived in a ancient manor house full of glorious clutter, and hundreds of paintings. I loved it! I'd cut sticks for her fireplace and in exchange she would give me art lessons.I used to tell my rough little street urchin mates that she paid me for the sticks- art lessons might have started a fight.

My mother always said that I was a "Jack-of-all-trades. Master-of-none" She might have been right! But the paintings that I turn out nowadays make me happy and give me great joy to paint. Isn't that the main thing in life?

What a gift God gave us when he gave us a creative soul. We all carry some of it with us and a lot of the time it gets buried in the mad rush of the modern world. But I urge you to find a silent place and take a pencil and paper and draw and write and hum and think just how grand and beautiful this old world really is. I tour a lot less with my music now and I take a wee bit more time to discover nature.

Last year my book " Messing About in Boats". The Nautical Confessions of an Unsinkable Irishman" to my great surprise made it into the top ten in Canada for Non-Fiction. So I have spent the past year painting subjects that belong in my story.

The characters and the boats, seascapes, harbours and all are part of me. I hope we get a chance to meet and chat about life and nature and moonshine and sinkable boats and ghosts and painting and perhaps play a few tunes as well.
